NUTZ and BOLTZ GRAMS RADIO MAMA

GRAMS Health Promotions Officer David Batty with Radio MAMA

Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medical Service (GRAMS) Health Promotions Officer David Batty launched his first NUTZ and BOLTZ radio show last Friday to raise awareness on men’s health issues.

David’s idea for the radio show begun last year when he was recording numerous radio ads for GRAMS’ Health Promotions Programs. He was approached by Radio MAMA to see if he were interested in undergoing some training in radio and possibly having his own show.

David then undertook his training through Community Media Training Organisation, receiving his certificate in Broadcasters Skills and launching his radio program promoting men’s health.

The program will air every Friday between 11am and 12pm with content focused on improving the wellbeing of Indigenous males living in regional WA. The show will also invite special guests from organisations around town and beyond to come in and have a yarn, sharing their health tips and advice on how to lead a healthy life.

David is excited to bring the NUTZ and BOLTZ program to the community and empower men to be proactive in managing their own health and wellbeing.

“I wanted the program’s name to be catchy whilst still representing the male community. Our bodies work like a machine and if we don’t look after ourselves, we get sick. NUTZ and BOLTZ reflects back to being a male and our core mission which is to encourage men to take control of their own health.”

“I chose to centre the show around men’s health due to my experience and knowing that us men just don’t take really good care of ourselves until we get sick. Through the show I want to be able to reach out to our male listeners and provide them with relevant information on men’s health topics, tips, training and what support is available” said Mr. Batty.

The first NUTS and BOLTZ program welcomed Dane Waters as a guest. Mr Waters has worked in Health Communication Resources for the past 14 years and explained on-air what health promotion is and how to best take care of your health.

“There is a perception that health promotion is just telling people not to smoke and eat veggies. While that’s very important there is so much more that the health promotion field does to help build whole and healthier communities.”

“I think radio programs such as NUTZ and BOLTZ are so important because there are definitely health issues that are specific to men.”

“Us men aren’t always great at looking after our health, particularly going to the doctor when we think something is wrong.”

“I speak from personal experience that prevention is always best to look after your health, but If something goes wrong it’s always best to catch it as early as possible” said Mr. Waters.

GRAMS encourages everyone to look after their health and get a regular check up with our doctors to identify any early signs of health issues.

Tune into David Batty’s NUTZ and BOLTZ radio show on Radio MAMA every Friday 11am to 12pm to hear the latest on men’s health in the Midwest region.
